 AMERICAN DREAM

What is it?

•This is a national ethos/culture of the United States in which freedom meant a promise of the possibility of prosperity and success.

 

•It states that "life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement" regardless of social class or circumstances of birth.

•Is rooted in the United States Declaration of Independence which proclaims "all men are created equal" and that they are "endowed by their Creator with certain absolute Rights" including "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

 

•African Americans could not see themselves sharing what the American dream had stated.

They could not see how White Americans could fight for their rights and position in the American dream.
